S4 E38 - May Reddit Special

In this episode, Colin and Jimmy tackle recent questions from the Home Improvement forum on Reddit!

Posted by u/un_confident. Gap between siding and ground: We have a pretty large gap between the bottom of our siding and the ground, it’s allowing both critters and plants to grow up beside the house. What’s the best way to close up this gap and clean up around the edge where plants won’t grow (and hopefully make it look a lot nicer than just dirt or weeds)

Posted by u/upended-reality: sliding glass door or deck build first? we are trying to plan out some modifications to our addition in the back yard. we want to add a 8x10 deck and sliding glass doors. this is all for the second floor. the question is do we build out the deck first then knock out the wall to install the sliding glass? or try to install the door first. it seems sketchy to try to install the doors without having a surface to work on from the outside. but building a deck with no entrance to it seems weird too. i'm just trying to get an idea for the order of operations. we don't have a layout or design yet.

Posted by u/Farquea: How do you keep on top of all the jobs and projects you identify around your house? I'm a relatively new home owner and a bit if a perfectionist and very detail oriented. Around my house I have a long list of projects as well as regular maintenance jobs to do. I find I simply don't have the time to get everything done and so my question is how do you do it, managing to stay on top of the things you need to or is it a case of accepting that I'll never have everything 'done' and perfect?

Posted by u/No_Fee_9021 “Hottest” kitchen countertops right now? Replacing kitchen countertops and sink, pretty certain I want a “farmers” style sink that’s for certain. I’ve always had granite countertops but now I’m uncertain if that’s the way to go. On one hand I know how to clean them, and they obviously handle heat really well. Quartz, marble, granite, butcher block, soapstone? We live in Connecticut if that makes a difference? Does anyone have a certain type of countertop and absolutely hate or love it? Thank you. (Money doesn’t matter, this is my “splurge”)

Posted by u/goundeclared: Most efficient way to remove old kitchen backsplash? Hey, I'm doing a small kitchen remodeling and wanted to remove the old backsplash and re-tile it. I've tried to preserve the drywall the best I can, but the tiles are large and difficult to remove. What would be the best way to approach this?

Posted by u/christian4000fish: How much to spend on a stud finder? I am going to attempt to run Ethernet in my house. I may have other questions at some point. But right now I want to buy a stud finder. There are some cheap ones around $20. And then there is a craftsman around $50. Should I just buy the cheap one? Thanks.

Posted by u/mmhm__ : Will removing the bathtub from the sole bathroom decrease the value of my house? My house is a 3 bedroom, one bathroom bungalow. The sole bathroom is downstairs in the middle of the house. It's outdated and I'd like to renovate. I have no kids or plans for babies so I'd like to remove the tub and make it shower only as part of the renovation. Will this decrease the resale value since many people would consider it a "starter home" for families who may want a bathtub for babies and whatnot?
